I would take my $1500-2000 and buy a good used better quality JD lawn tractor. Then you will have some thing that will last years without much trouble. You should be able to get a good GT275 or even a 325 for that type of money. They are the start of the garden tractor and would hold up well. Another very good model that would be in that range would be the LX 279 or LX 289. All of the models I have talked about have the Kawasaki motor and much heavier decks than your current mower.
Whatever you decide the JD decks will mow much better than the Cub cadet decks. I mow right beside a Cub every week. His yard does not look as good. His deck clumps any heavy juicy grass. Mine lays it out even.
