The ones your talking about we always call 'writing spiders'. Old wives tale is that if you put a paper with a name written on it close to their web they will match the pattern and put the name in the web. Never tried it but who knows. That said they are really cool to watch and, despite their size, they aren't the least bit agresive. I had one in the door of my shop a few years back. She kept putting the web down into the travel path and I kept removing just the strands that hit me in the face. Didn't take but two times of messing hp her web that she got the message and redesigned the web to be out of my way. I let her stay until she laid her egg sack and went on her merry way...... Have a few in other places every year, and like I said, need to watch so I just leave them alone....
