In addition to my post above, there were other presidents with military experience although I do not know how "significant" it might have been. Lyndon Johnson was called up when he was a US Representative and served in the US Navy and was awarded a Silver Star for "marked coolness under fire" although many later said it was a ploy by MacArthur to get as many members of congress as he could in his corner. President Roosevelt later ordered all of those members of congress who were serving back to their posts in congress. Again, you go where you're ordered to go. But, politics does play a part. Gerald Ford served in the US Navy in combat in the Pacific. Reagan's eyesight was so bad that he couldn't qualify but he did manage to serve in a training position making training films in Hollywood. Everyone did their little part. Some served in foxholes, some behind desks.
