Pay attention when you install the updates. Nearly always, one of the screens that come up will have a checkbox that you have to clear if you DON'T want the add on tool bars. I see that constantly on the java updates. If you get them installed, but don't want them, first go to add and remove programs in the control panel, and you can usually get them right back off. If not there, then you may have to go further. I've never seen a program yet that didn't leave some registry entries after the program was un-installed. Most of them can be safely deleted if you know what you're doing. With the program removed, though, they're likely just dead entries that don't work anymore. Also look at services under the administrative tools. You will likely find Google update service that you prob don't need unless you run google earth or others. Even if you disable the service you may still be able to update your programs manually when needed.
