As far as the guvment "programs" for training- its a way to funnel money to the colleges, in a way that is politically acceptable to many who would otherwise object.
My neighbor was a truck driver, and the outfit he worked for went broke. He went on unemployment, and they "retrained" him- to be an "ecologist". He went to community college for 2 years, all expenses paid, plus his weekly unemployment payments continued for the whole time (I think otherwise the limit was 39 weeks at that time).
He had a fine time- got to hang around with attractive young women, sit around the lounge and drink coffee, and get a "new career" in the process. Problem was, with only a 2 year degree, he didn't stand a chance of ever getting a job in that field- too many better trained people to compete with. And truck driving jobs were a dime a dozen at that time. So after looking for jobs in his new career for awhile, he gave up and got a truck driving job within a week.
Question is, why are we retraining people for a career that has far fewer jobs than the career they already had?
