If you can stand the expense, and aren't worried about being 'environmentally friendly', brake cleaner is an excellent poision for fire ants. I've sprayed many mounds in my yard, and in the field when I was working on something and there was one in the way, and have yet to see an ant that didn't die on contact with the stuff. Heck, I usually spray a ring around the mound before doing something to stir them up and get as many of them topside as possible before hitting it with the first blast and watching the bodies pile up.
I know they usually move the nest a little ways if you don't kill them all, but I have yet to see anymore in the general vicinity of one I've 'cleaned' out.
