You have some good advice here but i'll add a bit. I used to be a fan of Mossberg until a couple years ago. Their top mounted saftey is great and lines up perfect with my thumb. The last one I bought however I took apart to clean before it was fired and found iron fillings everywhere. I cleaned it all out and tried it and the slide locks up every so often after it is fired. I would find that to be inconvenient in a home defense situation. I don't think an intruder will be understanding and allow you to take your gun apart because its jammed up. I don't trust it at all so it got put in the back corner of a safe and not used since. I've had better luck with Remington but they still aren't as smooth as the older ones. The best advice is no matter what you buy take it out and use it until you know what to expect from the shotgun and yourself.
