12 or 20ga. will work and ammo is available for both and you can reload to what ever you want. Mossberg makes a model 500 in a home defense 20 ga 9 shot and 12 ga 8 shot. The 20 ga will be a lighter gun to move around with. Also in most cases when you confront an intruder it will be 10 feet or less from them and either gun will take them down at that range. Like said by others learn how to use the gun safely and take it out periodically to stay familiar with the gun.
