My Rant! The old standard of 1 car length for each 10 mph went out with whip sockets & singletrees. Standard for last 30 years or so in good weather is 2 second interval. First second is for brain to recognize a problem ahead & tell foot to move from gas to brake. Second is for foot to actually move to other pedal & slow down or stop. At 60mph you are travelling 88 ft/sec, gap should be 176ft At 50---------------------- 73-----------146 40-----------------------58-----------116 30-----------------------44------------88 If drivers would maintain proper gap, rear end crashes would essentially quit happening. Remember, if you rear end another vehicle, you are 100% at fault. NO chance to argue your way out of it, unless you are stopped & the other guy backs into you. Go ahead & flame me. Have had 3 moving tickets lifetime. Had been driving 30 years before getting first one, last one was 25 years ago. Worst crash I was in, I was stopped in traffic, guy behind me never let off the gas. Willie-diesel pilot, retired.
