We have both crushed shale and crushed river rock the shale is light and will never pack down if on a hill it will wash away. The river rock is much heavier and will pack in solid won't wash away. Makes a real solid road, I like it much better. Just don't use pea gravel like my uncle Frank did. BUMMER. Walt
