I do not think so, For sure not a direct swap (used engine). The 97 and early 98 are direct swap. The later 98 to 2000 is a direct swap for the most part, 01 to 04 and then 05 to 08 and up are direct swap.
That said, 97 and early 98 long block will exchange if you put your stuff on it. The later 98 up to 04 long block should, but 05 and up are only for 05-08.
I have put a 98 mustang motor (3.8) in a 97 but watch the lower intake gasket. They changed the water ports and one of the gaskets will not seal I think, I had to use a 98 lower intake gasket with the 97 lower intake (do not remember).
Being a 98 you need to determine when it was made. The early ones used a 3mm lower intake gasket, the later 98 a 4mm gasket and a different lower intake.
