: : : I went to my club's anual picknick and tractor meet last weekend . While watching the tractor pulling I couldn't help but wonder why it is , and what kind of person likes the sound of those two cylinder John Deere tractors. I just don't understand how anyone can think that a JD two cylinder idling at 100 RPM ( putt-putt ) sounds good. Compared to the smooth throaty roar of a Farmall for instance, the sound of a two cylinder tractor is like the sound of a flushing toilet. And what's the deal with the horizontal pistons ? Why, its unAmerican . It must be like owning a Subaru only louder. : : I agree!! : : I once had a JD B that we raked hay with. By the end of the day, that sound gets to you, not to mention the hand clutch that is clumsy not smooth to engage. I like IH tractors, but I think that the best sound from a pulling tractor was an Oliver 88 diesel. They really sound smooth. : I farm with 9 old tractors, including Deere (2 cyl. and 6 cyl.)4 Farmalls (gas and LP) 1 Allis and 1 MM, 1 MF diesel along with about 10 or 12 old two and four wheel garden tractors, and I think that any thing that will start and fire on all of the cylinders its supposed to without me having to work on it is pure music. (-: Farmer, that's a big ole 10-4.
