It's one of those things where just because a little is good doesn't mean more is better.
You don't want it glowing red - if you have to get it that hot you've got the wrong size.
It really comes down to what your clearance is. In some cases a hair dryer might be enough - but more likely a heat gun on low would be the way to go.
One note if you cool the shaft instead of heating the sleeve (or both) - I've done it by putting it in a freezer - then take it out and what I didn't consider was freezing condensation getting in the way of things. This time of year it might not be so bad - but something to consider.
