I really think dont think you asking a bad question.
My new to me Case 580SE backhoe tells you how much to add imprinted on each dipstick. I thought that was helpful. Saves a little time, yet I still double check after adding to make sure it is hitting the full line. But it is nice to know whether I should dump in a quart or a gallon.
Rule of thumb I use, if it is an engine 6-12 quart system, start by adding quart. If a hydraulic 10-20 gallon system, its probably a gallon you will add. This seems to be close based on what the dipsticks say on my 580.
