Dividing the estate equally is the only way to keep the kids from fighting over who gets what.
The one that gets the smaller piece will feel slighted, and get lawyers involved. In that case the only one who wins are the lawyers, but it's a scorched earth strategy: If I didn't get my "fair share" then nobody gets anything.
I think a lot of our societal problems are because people can't deal with grief. Mom/Dad died, I'm mad, someone's gotta PAY. Dog was running in the road and got run over, I'm mad, someone's gotta PAY. I was texting on my phone and ran into a bridge abutment, I'm mad, someone's gotta PAY. Kid lost football game, I'm mad, someone's gotta PAY. Money/revenge will make the hurt go away.
