because mainly ,we simply do not have enough left.we do do that to a certain extent,but heres the rub.at best we could last six months or so at current usage rates.when we start talking billions of barrels of oil thats a LOT of oil. but its not finite ,its not to our knowledge still being made .so for the US to trade on the world market things have to go both ways. if we said today we wouldnt sell anymore oil tommorrow,where do you believe oil prices would go? when opec says its cutting production where do prices go? when we cant produce enough oil domestically to meet our demand,we have to import.when we have to import we have to pay the costof those imports.oil company here can sell to us or others,whoever pays more,which is the rest of the world.as long as we could meet our demand for oil domesticaly,our fuel was cheap also.
