Nobody knows that. Not you and not me. GM could of gone through that bankruptcy without that bailout and maybe then would not be under Union ownership. Private stock-holders may have even gotten a better deal instead of they did get. So far - all of us taxpayers are out billions; not just the stock holders.
And what about Chrysler? Now 100% owned by Fiat of Italy and this was done with our tax dollars? If Chrysler had gone belly up, so what? In fact, same for GM. The majority of autos made in the USA are already made by foreign brand names. If another company fell - somebody would pick up the slack and have to hire more workers to do so. Hey - maybe even Ford - a company that survived with NO bail-out funny money.
