As a kid growing up in the south, late 40s, early 50s, neither I nor any of my chums wore shoes from March until November. Went to school, church and to town barefoot. Stepped on a hot cigarette butt a couple of times, a broken fruit jar once (eight stitches), numerous rusty nails (the treatment then was to soak the foot in a pan of "coal oil". Didn't help---long, lonely painful nights.)
I was constantly stubbing my toes---there's not a normal toenail on either foot. But my starkest memories of going barefoot were those many times of running full-tilt into a patch of grass burrs; it was like having a high-speed blowout. Problem was, your momentum carried you into the center of the patch and there was no easy way out.
Grassburrs were one of God's crueler inventions. Many times we had to go out in the field and pick up our bird dogs when they ran into these things.
