carried one of those in 16ga for many years ,really good quail gun. as far as the barrels go,theres damascus, then theres damascus.good damascus barrels are as good as any other, bad ones are unsafe PERIOD! these have good damascus barrels, and in fact were considered better than the steel barrels of the day,and you paid a premium to get them with damascus.if the barrels are not pitted badly,or dented etc,i would shoot it with modern lead ammo. and in fact i shot literaly thousands of rounds through mine.i wouldnt ever shoot steel ,or its equivalent, though. I am not suggesting anyone do it, but i have and would again on a good gun. theres a stigma to old shotguns with damascus barrels, but the fact is modern shotshells were developed to match old black powder loads very closely.great care was taken to match them simply because black powder loads had been developed to the point they were about maximized even with black. check a modern load ( unless its one of the modern specialty loads) and youll find pressures are almost identical accross the board.extra hard shot, wads, and shot cups that dont deform in chokes are what gets your guns.if you reload your shot shells, simply load them with felt cushion wads and cardboard overpowder and shot wads and things, even can load them with modern cartridge grade pyrodex if your afraid of your gun.but youll find in any good reloading book pressures remain fairly constant. if your afraid of one you shouldnt shoot it with ANY load period.
