: : : : : : : : I went to my club's anual picknick and tractor meet last weekend . While watching the tractor pulling I couldn't help but wonder why it is , and what kind of person likes the sound of those two cylinder John Deere tractors. I just don't understand how anyone can think that a JD two cylinder idling at 100 RPM ( putt-putt ) sounds good. Compared to the smooth throaty roar of a Farmall for instance, the sound of a two cylinder tractor is like the sound of a flushing toilet. And what's the deal with the horizontal pistons ? Why, its unAmerican . It must be like owning a Subaru only louder.

: : : : : : : Flushing toilet eh? Maybe so, but any idiot can see which brand of tractor always wins the pulls, and believe me, where I come from it aint the red ones. After the pulls are over, the red tractors paint jobs and their owners faces match rather nicely.

: : : : : : Every pull that I go to the green ones are not that great.

: : : : : Flushing toilet!!!!!!!!!! I love it! The best green I saw at the last tractor pull was a BIG RED winning some GREENBACKS! GO IH!

: : : : Did this proverbial big red have a TA in it? Or more properly said, out of it!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have never seen a TA yet in the 300,350,400,450,460,560 "big reds" that would still work, and even if you spent all those greenbacks fixing one of them, they would not stay fixed. What a fine piece of American machinery. Green Gene

Ok, Ok guys I will try being nice for a change. About 15 years ago I had a 560 and maybe it was just a lemon, but you had to change the hyd filter about once a week if you wanted the hydraulics to work. It would get full of steel shavings. The TA never did work right in one of the ranges, I can't remember if it was high or low, but it would not pull in one of them. And no offense, but I didn't have any 2 pt equipment, and my 3 pt equipment wouldn't fit, so I couldn't use it for anything but pulling a baler or cutter. It just kind of left me with a bad feeling for IH, and the 1650 Oliver which I bought and replaced the 560 with was a lot better tractor. Today I use modern John Deere tractors, and having not used anything else which is modern, I can't compare them to anything, but I sure do like them with their SG cabs and air conditioning in this Texas heat. Have a good day. GG
: : : I have three 300, a 350 and a Super MTA each with torque amplifier. All of the TA units are strong and the tractors work on the farm every day!!
: : : I know here in Maryland that there are more old IH tractors working in the feilds than JD. I guess that the poppers are "washed up". An IH with the torque out of it still is a superior tractor to that pop pop pop crap!!!!!

: : Whatever, and don't you just love that excellently misengineered thing called the 2 pt. or fast hitch?
: fast hitches are great! a big red minus the TA, missing on 3 cylinders, 2 flat tires, and an operator that carries a flask of old grandad in his toolbox is infinately better than your so called green machine. maybe you just green with envy.

Today's Featured Article - Listening to Your Tractor - by Curtis Von Fange. Years ago there was a TV show about a talking car. Unless you are from another planet, physically or otherwise, I don’t think our internal combustion buddies will talk and tell us their problems. But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo. ... [Read Article]
