Sometimes kids learn what they're taught at home...and sometimes they don't.
When my kids were small, sometimes I worked as many as 3 jobs just to make sure the bills got paid. I showed up for work on time, every day...never left early, often stayed over...went to work when I was sick, because the bills didn't stop when I stopped feeling good...and generally I tried to set a good example for the two of them. I never cheated on my wives--the one who died after 14-1/2 years of marriage, or the current one I've been married to for 18 years and counting. And while I like an occasional bourbon and coke, neither of my kids have ever seen me drunk.
With my son, he wasn't much problem when he lived at home; it was my daughter who gave us fits. Both left home at 18; my son left on his birthday, and my daughter left 2 weeks after hers.
Today my daughter is 28, happily married, with a 5-year-old son; she's about to start a new job, after putting in 7 years on her previous job. She has matured well, and is my best buddy in the world. She and her husband have lived in the same place for the past 3 years, and he's worked the same job for 11 years.
My son, 32, is sitting in jail, doing six months for a DUI conviction; when this one is over, he has the "opportunity" to transfer to another county and deal with the consequences of a DUI there. He has two children by two different women...one of whom he's actually still married to, until the divorce is final [in another state]. Right after my son went to jail, he was evicted from his rental home for nonpayment of rent, and we sold his few meager possessions to pay for his attorney fees. He WAS in the Army Reserve, and served a tour in Iraq....happy Veteran's Day in jail, I suppose.
My son was the "genius" in school; everything came easy to him. My daughter, while quite intelligent, had to work harder at it. I took the kids to church every Sunday, and did my best to live the way I was taught there...and encouraged them to do the same.
So was I a bad parent?
Based on my son's outcomes...many would say yes. Based on my daughter's outcome...many would say no. And sometimes it just depends on what the individual CHOOSES to learn, and what example, if any, they choose to follow.

Today's Featured Article - Hydraulics - Cylinder Anatomy - by Curtis von Fange. Let’s make one more addition to our series on hydraulics. I’ve noticed a few questions in the comment section that could pertain to hydraulic cylinders so I thought we could take a short look at this real workhorse of the circuit. Cylinders are the reason for the hydraulic circuit. They take the fluid power delivered from the pump and magically change it into mechanical power. There are many types of cylinders that one might run across on a farm scenario. Each one could take a chapter in
