Southern chisel plows are different than northern chisel plows, as well as soil types.
'Here' you want about 20-25 hp per chisel shank, if you want to get an inch or 2 deeper than the plow pan in the hard clay soil, it takes a bunch of hp to rip that up, but it's the whole point of being out there.
I just got a 7 shank 4 inch twisted chisel plow, going a10 inches deep, it was all my 145hp tractor wanted at times.
His tractor should do some work out there in the field with 75 hp on 5 shanks, I assume standard 2 inch shovels. There might be times he'll have to get a little shallower than he wantys, but mostly in lighter soil than I have, it should work out.
Not saying you are wrong, Goose, just that things can sure be different in different places. :)
