And those were real hemispherical chambers, too. The current, so called "Hemi" is called that because it IS NOT a hemispherical chamber at all, "hemi" is nothing but a registered trademarked marketing tool that sucks in the 'would be macho man' , just like "Ram" is a registered trademark. Registered to Chrysler. FIAT owns Chrysler & thus owns Ram.
The 426 CU IN engines of yesteryear were real hemispherical combustion chamber (half a grapefruit) engines with widely splayed valves (58.5 degrees), open chamber for good cross flow breathing. Today's "Semi-Hemi", or "HINO" (hemi in name only), has a chamber that is no where near hemispherical and narrow angle (34 degrees) valve arrangement, because without the "bathtub" combustion chamber it would not be able to meet current emissions standards. Even with that non-hemi chamber, it still needs another crutch to squeak by emissions, two plugs per cylinder! Why does it look so puny compared to the 426? The narrow valve angle is the answer. Cummins is really all that ever got them back into the truck market & the transmission & front end & tinny body manages to skate by because of someone else's diesel. Open the door, lift gently on door & watch the whole A-pillar bend/flex/move! P.S. expect the "HINO" to go away in the next round of emissions tightening. Oh, they may keep fooling some with the trademarked name by attaching it to some other design, but not the current engine. I'm sticking with my International....a real truck!
