out here as far as legally you don't need anything, if your paying cash for an old tractor but if you financing a newer one there will be paperwork on the loan if the tractor is the collateral for the loan,with the serial number on the papers, that being said its always a good idea to make a bill of sale so you have some document proving ownership in case it gets stolen, and later recovered, also these days you may be asked for proof of ownership when transporting, either at ports of entry into another state or by a random traffic inspection by the law, there are a lot of thieves stealing tractors and farm equipment to sell for scrap, dot out here is interested in tractors being transported with no equipment attached to them, ie if its obviously on its way to a job and the truck is a frequently seen unit they dont bother much, but one being hauled by itself on non local plates their liable to stop the truck and inquire as to what your doing
