This is a little off subject, but I visited Cass, WV last summer to ride on the Cass Scienic Railroad. And what an experience it was! These Shay steam engines are half-size compared to the big "piston" steamers of the main line railroads, but they are capable of amazing feats, such as pulling a load up 11% grades and turning 33% curves. It is a 4 hour ride to a mountain top with a magnificant 180 degree view. This is hands on experience with chance to talk to engineer, firemen, brakemen, smell the smoke see the steam and hear the whistles and bells. I haven't master the art of posting pictures here yet, but anyone interested can google shay engines or Cass Scenic RR and get a taste of what they look like. Today's Featured Article - Restoration Story: Fordson Major - by Anthony West. George bought his Fordson Major from a an implement sale about 18 years ago for £200.00 (UK). There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard. From the engine number, it was found that this Major was produced late 1946. It was almost complete but had various parts that would definitely need replacing.
