He's staying at the vet's tonight to let the drainage tube make the mess there rather than in the house here. He'll be staying in the house and keeping quiet--or at least trying for a few days. Goes back in two or three days to have the tube out hopefully. It's hard to believe it got that infected overnight. I've always had a "better safe than sorry" attitude with all my dogs when it comes to trips to the vet.
