Larry, I looked up your IP, says you"re near Grand Rapids Mi. It bet it was raccoon or maybe a weasel/mink. Most of the opossums I have seen do not want to fight, but being that your dog is a pup, maybe it was an opossum.
I have seen pine marten up north but nothing down in the lower part of Michigan where we are at. Doubt it was a fisher since they can push 20 lbs and likely would have killed the dog.
I have been dealing with a mink on and off here for a few years. Sooner or later I will win, but at the moment he is getting a full belly on my chickens. But he doesn"t eat them, just rips out their throat. The chicken cage is mink proof right now.
