James...you want stooping ...the first house is a bed and breakfast we stayed in ...this is what you had to stoop under to get across the bedroom.....! It is part of the structure of the roof and only about 4 foot off the floor, right across the middle of the room. The house had been an old 'Hall house' with only a single storey high roof. A couple of centuries ago someone added another floor and this had to be left in place to keep the roof from pushing the walls out!. Sam
