Depends entirely on what your hunting,,your topic mentions a 243,i truly like the 243, i own 2( and im building a custom one now as time permits), but after years of hunting animals of all types,i dont think its a really great deer rifle.its adequate, but being adequate is simply not good enough in lots of cases. ive shot many deer with mine, and carried one this year, but i dont take anything but the best shots with it. for all around hunting with one rifle, forget most of the gadets and gizmos. if i were to own just one rifle,(at last count i have 30),and was going to simply puchase it, i would go with a remington 700,winchester 70,or the savage. prefferably in a synthetic or laminated stock, and the cal of choice would be at least 7mm mag,or a 300 win mag.either can be handloaded down to much lesser cartridge levels very easily, but the power is there if you need it. What i carry most often, day in and day out,in the most cases ,is a custom 98 mauser barreled in 30-06, now in a sythetic stock, with a 3-12 swift scope, folding open sights on the barrel, and reciever drilled and tapped for a peep sight, thats wrapped in a oiled rag under the butt plate, along with a spare firing pin. its been many many miles around world with me, its never failed if i didnt.and ive lost track of how many animals,of all sorts and sizes its shot.barrel is free floated from three inches ahead of the reciever, its glass bedded, and it always works for me.its heavy, its ugly,it doesnt have all the bells and whistles, but it works. my opinion of course.
