As I stated before conditions will dictate. The 243 is OK for something like deer out to about 300 YDS. Past that they just don't get the penetration. Lite fast moving bullets bleed off energy too fast past sertain ranges to be effective. I know most people don't shoot past a range they are comfortable with. I'm comfortable with my 270 out to about 600 YDS. Past that it too starts bleeding off energy way to fast. The big problem with deer or larger critters is getting the round in far enough to do major damage. For smaller animals both the 223 and 243 are great guns. I still don't think much of Slavage/Stevens weapons. The Rem 700, Win 70 and Ruger M77's are pretty good guns with a lot of bang for the buck. My son in smithing school has to build a rifle. He's going to build me a 25.06 on a Mauser action. It will be my first varmit gun as such.
