Not with kidney cancer, but my brother donated one of his kidney's to his father in law a few years back.
Tiny incision and they popped it right out of him. It was all suprisingly easy and routine.

I'd hope it's as simple as that with your dad.
Don't wait, don't mess around, just do it as soon as possible while he's in good health.
With somebody at that age you're into the realm of increased risks during surgery, much more so if whatever it is starts making him weaker or unhealthy.
If your not happy with the date the hospital sets for him - fight it or change hospitals. I learned that lesson the hard way with my mom. You have to be your dad's advocate, don't just trust that they've got his best interest in mind - caring can get lost in the bureaucracy.
Good luck - keep his spirits up and stay positive. Doctors can do amazing things these days.
