My favorite dumb crook story, we hired a young kid to operate our DAF unit at the rendering plant. The rendering plant aspect is important because when you're hiring people to wade around in chicken guts your applicant pool usually to say the least below average. Our DAF operator decides he needs a little more money and gets the bright idea to steal another employee's pay check and does so. He steals the check of a part time college student who works for us. The student's father is one of the local farmers and happens to crop our spray field and does a lot of dirt work for the company they are also fairly well known in the area. So now our hero has grabbed and additional pay check and committed a felony for the princely sum of about $75.00. Our hero not doing much ground work on his crime decides to be smart and takes the stolen check over to the next town to cash it. Yep walks into the bank in the next town east of the plant and hands the check to a teller and asks to cash it, not knowing the teller he handed the check to is the Aunt of the check's real owner.
