Actually it's not. I was in the Army when we changed over from the .45ACP to 9MM. We went from training one shoot per to the double tap. Now that we have soldiers and Marines in combat the Army at least is teaching triple tap (son is infantry, US Army Nation Guard, that's what they are being trained to do with the 9MM) and the Marine Spec Ops is going back to the 45 ACP. Us going to the 9MM had more to do with getting NATO to go with the 556MM than anything else.
One properly placed round? The Army went to great lengths to teach us the "8 steady hold factors" in basic rifle marksmanship training. That goes right out the window when someone fires at you the first time! Most guys pick it back up after the first few minutes but after a lot of lead has be fired both ways.
You can look it up. First thing that happens in a high stress situation is adrenalin starts flowing affecting your heart rate and nerves. Both have a negative impact on your ability to shoot well. Just look at the cops. Look how many rounds most have to fire to put someone down. And they train for that. That's why our Special Ops guys will run to a range and as soon as they arrive start shooting. Plus they pull stuff on the to make the sweat a little. They will shoot thousands of rounds to be able in a high stress situation to hit with the first round. Now try telling me that waking in the middle of the night with someone in your house isn't going to be high stress. Now with the stress level turned up just a tad, try shooting and hitting a target with a put down or killing shot in low light conditions.....every time! Caliber here isn't really going to matter, just get a good shot under those conditions, one shot only. May be all you get a chance at.
And all that could be put off if someone can sneak in. That happened here quit a few years ago. Woman woke in time to see a guy plunge a knife into her still sleeping husbands heart. So unless you have something that will wake you should someone break in.....barking dog, alarm....ect. you may never get the chance.

Today's Featured Article - A Question for Dads This recent topic from the Tractor Talk discussion board is being highlighted because it is an awesome display of the caliber of individuals that have made this site their own. The young person asking questions received positive feedback and advice from total strangers who "told it like it is" with the care many reserve for their own kids. The advice is timeless... so although it isn't necessarily antique tractor related, it will be prominently displayed in our archives to honor those who have the courage to ask and those who have the courage to respond in an honest, positive manner.
