Now this sounds like a winner. This is actually an idea I can agree with, especially from a safety standpoint.
A thought on your hard starting is that maybe it had (or was converted to) a 24 volt system. With that type of
system you would be able to start it with 12 volt (barely) but like you say not do it in gear.
