The local Sheriff told him that he had no proof that John was the one breaking in. Told him to call 911 if he caught/could prove who was doing it.
Also remember that John was out walking the streets after beating his girl friend up and having a fire arm involvement with the police in KY. So that kind of shows you how well the law works in these type of things.
You are telling us that you would never kill your son. I bet that if you asked Leroy last week he would have told you the same thing.
Also have you ever had your own son try to kill/hurt you???? I have four sons. I will tell you I don't think I would ever have to kill one of them. I can't guarantee that. I would protect my wife and grand kids if they where threatened by one of them. So it could happen.
I have had one of them try to seriously hurt me. He would have gotten the job done if I did not have the training I have had. I was able to handle him without either of us being hurt seriously. He totally flip out, blinded by anger over something that looked stupid later but then he was unable to realize that. He would have hurt me seriously if he could have.
Also talk to some people have dealt with people on drugs. Some of the drugs make the user completely unreasonable to deal with and very violent. They will steal/rob to get their next fix.
I am thinking that John was finally hitting bottom financially. He was frantic to get money. He thought his only way was to get it from Leroy.
I would bet that Leroy thought he could still control John by just being his father. He more than likely thought he could get John to settle down and act right. People on drugs do some real strange and violent things. Even guys just drunk will do that as well. Not every time but some times.
I am not trying to start a fight with you but your assertion that you would never do this or that is naive. You are right in that 99.9% of us will never have to make that decision.
Leroy had to and I bet that it was made in the blink of an eye. Hindsight is always 20/20.
Here are some facts:
1) Leroy has been an upstanding member of the community his entire life.
2) John was his only child. Not just only son, his only child.
3) Leroy, Diana, and John used to be a real tight knit family.
4) An addiction helped tear that apart.
5) John will never be back.
So there are no winners in this situation. Just losers all around.

Today's Featured Article - Product Review: Black Tire Paint - by Staff. I have been fortunate in that two of my tractors have had rear tires that were in great shape when I bought the tractor. My model "H" even had the old style fronts with plenty of tread. My "L" fronts were mismatched Sears Guardsman snow tires, which I promptly tossed. Well, although these tires were in good shape as far as tread was concerned, they looked real sad. All were flat, but new tubes fixed that. In addition to years and years of scuffing and fading, they had paint splattered on
