Cheap labor.
My brother and I are in business together. He lived down in Monterey Mexico, and Jaurez for about five years handling quality control for several manufacturers with plants down there.
But things were going from bad to worse.
People started getting gunned down randomly, and kidnappings started becoming more and more popular.
It's a real big problem, and happens more than you'd ever think.
They'll kidnap an american, and hold them for a small ransom that most families will just pay without involving the police.
MUCH safer to pay 5 grand and get your son back than risk their life hoping for some help from the mexican police (who are probably in on it anyways)!
We decided it simply wasn't worth the risk - so he pulled out and moved to china where he does the same work, but much, much more safely.
Say what you will about a strict government, I've never felt safer on city streets than I do in Hangzhou China.
Get caught dealing drugs - shot in the head. Get into a bar fight - prison for a month.
They don't screw around.
Sure you have to know the right people to keep from getting robbed by the local government, but that's not all that different than the good ol' USA.
