I know your area well. Lived in upstate NY many years.
Trust me. The rural west is very very different from where you are now. Lower taxes, Higher land prices. Some trashy people both places. As for taxes...you get what you pay for....lower taxes, lower services.
Picking up and moving is a much bigger challenge than most expect and many do not stick it out...pack up and go home.
As for gun laws. Don't over react. Upstate is still very very rural and I don't see big changes for long arms for hunting. Assault rifles maybe. Never had one, cant see why I need one. I've hunted the Adirondacks and Booneville area for years and never had a gun check.
Some people are going to get very wealthy scaring us gun owners into contributing money for no real purpose, except their salaries.
