My brother called sunday around noon, and was in Sandy Ore., and needed a ride home to Burns Ore.It seems that he had totaled his 02 ford windstar in Sandy, and was afoot.I had just picked my 94 ford 150 4x4 from the shop, after spending a grand on the front end, and chose to use it to go rescue bro Herb, being as Oregon was having a lot of snow, and we needed to go over Mt Hood, down to Bend before cutting east for Burns. My 45 yr old truck driver son went with me to share the driving, and it turned out that the 4 wheel option was needed. WE got bro Herb picked up, and delivered at his home in Burns by 12:00 Sunday night, and done a quick turn around, and headed back for Bend. About 1:15 we were sailing along in the truck about 60 mph, and out of a flat snowy desert field, comes a full grown elk cow, and we caught her airborne, right square brodside, with the entire grill and bumper. From the time we seen her launch from the shoulder of the road, to impact, was measured in fraction of a second.The score was Ford 150 --0 Elk--0, and neither of the two very cold, and scared humans, were hurt in the least. (Just my feelings)That desert has no traffic out there, most times, and for sure that late on sunday night!Temp was 2 degrees, and ears were burning .After seeing that both the truck, and elk were permanetly dead, we saw headlights coming a mile down the road. Turned out to be a odot snow plow truck. he called a tow truck, and sit there and kept us warm in his cab for 3 hrs, till a tow truck got there, and delivered us to a super 8 motel in Bend. We took a room around 5:00am,and stayed there till my daughter could drive down from Tacoma, and bring us home.We got home for Christmas, and had a great one. Things aren"t as bad as they might seem, when you have a great family, and they belive in taking care of each other. Sure was glad to see my 6 tractors looking out the open front, of my tractor shed as we came up the drive!
