Met him in Vietnam. HE was a true leader. He did not just lead from the back like most of the current generation does.
We had just gotten back from a mission. We had been out for over two weeks and only had taken a weeks worth of food. We had found some things to eat but we where pretty hungry. So as soon as we hit the base we went straight to the chow line/mess hall. While we where in line some 90 day wonder came over and started to chew us out for being in the mess hall all filthy dirty. Just as he was ordering us out of the mess hall Everyone in the mess hall came to attention. Schwarzkopf came in and chewed that second lieutenant out for giving us grief. HE screamed at that second lieutenant that he needed men like us a lot worse than he need him. Told us to go ahead and eat.
I believe he was a light Colonel then. He later checked with our company commander to make sure that the second lieutenant had not tried to cause us any more trouble.
He was a real class act. Nothing like the ones leading now.
