First of all , if the banks and things loaned money unsecured they DESERVED to loose, right along with your coop etc. Cant use someones elses land for collateral,if so im putting a note against yours. You say the dad kept his home farm,how many acres did he lose? The boys kept the dairy and sold it,to who and did they assume the mortgage? If you own land and one guy offers you $10 and acre to lease it,and another offers $100 who would you rent it to? You say the landowners couldnt rent their land? Nonsense, plain and simple. He defaults they were released from any contract. Come on ,tell us the whole story. In fact the bankrupcy courts often cannot take your home and cars and things especialy if your a smart enough buisness man to keep your buisness and home seperate. You see things from a certain perspective and i understand that, but theres more to these stories obviously.You say what these folks had left, but what exactly did they lose? Heres a cold hard fact for you right from the US ag depts records, 47% of ALL FARMS in the US operate legaly in the red. They were never intended to make money,and never have. Look around you and really be honest,and youll find WAY more small farmers operating in this category. Its a sad but true fact ,that nearly half the ENTIRE farm community operate as nothing more than a tax shelter. Far and wide big and small makes no difference, but by and large the so called mid to big time operators are the ones actually running farms as a paying buisness. When one fails, it does inpact the whole community oftentimes for the simple fact that they pump very often millions of dollars into their local economies. My idea is this,if i invest a thousand an acre putting in and harvesting a crop on one acre, multiply that by 10,000 and thats what those folks are doing oftentimes. My one acre can make just as much crop as theirs, just on a 10,000 time smaller scale. They do make more money,and they take a much higher risk. For every one of those that go broke,100 small time farmers will. Sad thing is you wont see it,simply because those small time guys were operating in the red to start with or they simply dont lose enough to impact others! they are in the buisness TO lose money often times.If they go broke thats right up their alley, they are the ones most often the most likely to be working the system. Heres the deal, you walk into a bank with one of those so called bto's, which one do you think is more likely to walk out with a loan? you with your ten acres , or him with his ten thousand? banks dont loan money expecting to lose it, if they do, they would be shut down in thirty days.Just for your info i am not a bto the most ive ever FARMED was 2000 acres. mostly we raised cattle. i currently have @ 800 acres mostly laying unused because of the drought. will I lease it? not no but he!! no. if there is enough grass for a renter to use i'll feed it to my own cattle. thats the most common complaint i here on this board, guys want to lease land, and the owner wont lease it to them. so they think he's an idiot or something. heres a news flash for you guys, theres FAR more reasons NOT to lease or sell land, than their is TO lease it out. sorry for the rant,,,
