one of the things that hurts the US is that we give away so much of our innovation and inventions. There is a commercial for a hospital that plays on the air here in the Detroit area about doctors working on Chinese patients via the Internet and employing practices that were done with research right here at that hospital. Now, I would bet that the Chinese are not paying anything close to what it's worth, if anything at all. And I'm sure there were taxpayer funds involved in the research in some form or fashion.
I remember working for GM at a time when we always had foreign individuals coming through our plants. The talk was of partnerships but it wasn't hard to figure out they just wanted to steal our methods and practices.
Same goes for defense. We are considered the world policeman. Countries rail against us until they need help. The way I think it should work is that if your country is in trouble and you want our protection or help, here's the invoice. That works for countries like Iraq who should be paying us back in discounted oil. Afghanistan? They've got nothing and all the more reason we should get out. Treat foreign policy like a business.
