Yup, nothing a fellow can't find satisfying about hard-water fishing.
Not much rif-raf out there, no ticks, misquitos, your beer doesn't get warm- if you are inclined to sip a barley pop.
A spring cancer fundraiser nearby features fillets of bluegill and sunfish with breading so thin you could read a newspaper through it. They even peal the skin off the fillets...those folks just live for the hard water season.
Back-in-the-day, early to mid 1960's, our family of four would drive down to the Mississippi River, carry out the hand-powered ice auger and we kids took turns lugging the 2' by 2' by 2 1/2' high wooden box with the ice skimmer, poles and tackle box out onto the ice/snow. Woolen mittens, gloves, long-handles under wool or corduroy pants...years before snowmobile suits, TV's (that's televisions folks)...oh yeah, dad's cigarette lighter-fluid hand warmer in a purple velvet bag.
In those days, the railroads ran passenger trains along what is now called 'The Great River Road' along the southwest coast of Wisc. I recall seeing observation cars coupled in the array of cars.
I wouldn't doubt mom packed us peanut butter and brown sugar sandwiches on home-made bread, just like in tobacco harvest. "...sticks to your ribs and gives you energy."
Thanks for stirring those good memories, mom will turn 75 tomorrow...sure would be nice if she was sober again.

There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard. From the engine number, it was found that this Major was produced late 1946. It was almost complete but had various parts that would definitely need replacing.
