Been there done that many times. The two speed shifter on the stick went out. It has three wires, a hot and two shift wires. Get under the truck with jumper wires and arc it and you can shift it to either to get it home.
The buttons aren't expensive - they are generic for everything. I have a Borg Warner one in the shed I will go get you the number.
Be good to that rear end shift motor. Those things are PRICEY. You would be junking the truck if you burnt it up.
I always shift it when I am just barely rolling to a stop. They work on a big spring so sometimes they don't mesh if they don't hit just right.
