The real Vikings were those 8th to 12th century Norsemen from what is now Sweden, Norway and Denmark. They were raiders, traders, marauders. They cruised around in their long boats and attacked the Atlantic coastal areas of Europe. They conquered and then settled much of England and what is now Normandy in northern France. Some of them went as far as to go through the straights of Gibralter and into the Mediteranian Sea. Others made their way into what is now Russia. Rus was the name for for Swede. Still others sailed the Atlantic and made Iceland and Greenland their homes. The conguered peoples, especially in England were subject to a harsh but fair set of laws called the Danelaw and were forced to pay tribute called Danegeld (dane gold). A couple of their greatest kings were Knute the Great and Harold Bluetooth. Some of the last of the pre Christian Europeans, their main gods were Woden, Thor and Freya from which we get Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Excuse me if I don't get all the facts exactly right as I'm banging this out from memory. I really don't care about a bunch of silly, modern teams and games. But I do like learning about the Vikings.
