No, the Shoe Farms are still operating breeding standardbreds (trotters), see link below. Bunch of smaller outfits around the area as well. Our little piece of the country was the manager"s house for a larger place before we bought it. What appealed to us was that the barn was all set up for horses, house could have been falling down and we still would be here.
When the kids were very young we used to buy a bag of carrots and go visit the barns. Really amazed me that these horses were worth millions and we could walk up to them and give them a carrot any old time. Of course spring meant foaling season and if we headed over to the foaling barn we were almost guaranteed a new foal to see. Even witnessed a few births. Fun time for the kids, but they still love the horses and I have come to realize that it was not cheap entertainment like I thought it was.
