I'm big on reloading; that eliminates the price of new ammo. I know; there is an initial cost of reloading equipment and supplies, bullets, powder and primers but once you have that stuff, you are pretty much set.
I'm almost 70 years old and I've had rifles since I was about 12 years old. My primary interest for years was woodchuck hunting here in the north east. We used kind of heavy, long barreled rifles with big scopes. ( still have my 14x Unertl target scope.) I'm not a "long barrel fan" any more.
I've used a .243., 22/250 .223 and 22 Hornet. If I had to go with just one caliber,it would be a 22/250. .243 is more than needed, 22 Hornet not enough for longer ranges, the.223 is darn good but I think that the 22/250 is at the top of the list. Just a little bit more to it than a .223.
I've had Remingtons and Savages. Twenty years ago, the Remingtons were the choice but today, one of the Savgge models in 22.250 would be hard to beat. No experience with Rugers.
That's my $.02 based on my years of experience; whatever you decide to do, enjoy!
