I think sports are very good - for the children who play them. They build strong bodies, teach that winning means giving it your all and that teamwork can accomplish great things. Sports teach kids to be magnanimous in victory and not be resentful in defeat. JD, I was reminded of a passage in I Corinthians (13:11)by one of your posts the other day. "When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things." Spectator sports do not edify a man or a nation. They do not give rise to fine thoughts, fine art, noble purposes or great inventions. Modern sports make us petty, colloquial and inattentive to not only the problems of life but the finer things of life. Modern sports rob us of much and leave us empty, unfulfilled. The more sports we have, the more sports we collectively watch, the quicker will be the moral, intellectual, artistic, religious, philosophical and inventive decline of this great republic.
