I remember when mn had 4% sales tax. They took it to 5% but said that was just temp, to get things balanced. They were right, a year later they made it 6%.......
Now cities and counties can add to it, and some can access special taxes for stadiums and stuff, so no one knows that it really is, typically around 7%.
Food and clothing is not taxed tho.
Now they want to includ clothing, but lower the tax, but only tax clothes over $200, but offer rebates to poor people paying clothing tax, but generate more stable sales tax off of rich people.....
Oh boy. What a mess. We have a high income tax as well, but real estate taxes are only on land and buildings, not possessions like some of you have, and the real estate is mostly local county driven.
So, of late, the state has stopped making payments to the local counties and school districts, so the real estate tax has to go up to fund county services, which the state mandates they have but no longer funds...
