I have a desktop system I built from scratch using (mostly) components from NewEgg. It has given no problems over the past six years, aside from replacing the DVD burner last month. I'll probably upgrade the motherboard in a couple of years, assuming it doesn't quit before then. About once a year I upgrade the Linux operating system, and I have to clean out the CPU heat sink every year or two. My previous system I kept going for about fifteen years, but once the AT form factor became obsolete I had to switch to an ATX system. Building is definitely the only way to go for a desktop system; you pay a little more than you would for a Wally World PC, but you get a system that's upgradable for years to come.
