My guess is that 69 Fury was a very rare car. I doubt that even 1% of Fury production had the slant 6 and much fewer than that had the 3 speed manual transmission. Did it get good gas mileage?
The Fury of that era was a tough car. Lots of them were in police and taxi service. With the 440 V8, they worked great as high speed pursuit cars. But most had 318"s or 383"s. Unfortunately they tended to rust pretty bad--I seldom see them any more.
My family had a 70 Fury III that was a real lemon. The 383 2barrel engine always burned oil, always got less than 10mpg and would not go 100mph. The front end had something wrong with it that the alignment people could not seem to fix, so it wore out the front tires in about 10K miles. And the paint was bad--there were spots on the lower body with visible rust the second year we had it. My Dad went round and round with Chrysler for a couple of years about the many problems with the car, and finally they almost GAVE him a brand new Dodge Dart and took back the Fury. That Fury was undoubtedly the worst car my parents ever had.
On the other hand, one of our neighbors had a slightly newer Fury with a 318 that he drove for over 30 years. He claimed that it generally got almost 20 mpg driving around and more on the road. He had it painted a couple of times, but I don"t know if he ever did much to it mechanically. He always said it was a darn good car.
I suspect that our 70 Fury was built first thing Monday morning, or last thing Friday afternoon. It was pretty screwed up.
I drove slant 6 powered Darts and Valiants for many years. The engines were usually very tough and long lived. The clutches gave me some trouble, but I got so I could change a clutch in a couple of hours. The automatics were pretty bulletproof. The A bodies were fairly simple cars that held together well, and were easy to fix yourself if that became necessary.
I don"t think I ever saw a 69-71 Fury with a slant 6. I bet that engine looked kind of small in that huge area under the hood. And I bet it was fairly underpowered for freeway use, but fine around town. Interesting topic!
